Martin Luther (1483-1546) and Joan of Arc (1412-1431) were accused of heresy since their challenge of the conventions of the Catholic Church was non-conformist and apostate (renouncer of religious\political belief). In the middle ages, a heretic was a dissenting Christian whose beliefs and practices contradicted the core tenets of Christianity. The ‘heretic’ (noun, from Latin and Greek) evolved from Catholic and orthodox religious belief and refers to unorthodox thinkers whose practice challenged religious authority. ![]() It originally referred to belief and practices that did not correspond to orthodox church doctrine. ![]() HERESY (Greek and Latin choice) has been in existence in the English language from the 12th century. ![]()
